Bound Brook buys 60 tree-watering bags with federal grant
BOUND BROOK — Bound Brook received a 2011 federal grant which was used to purchase 60 tree-watering bags and to provide a soil and insecticide treatment for a dozen slippery elms that had been infested with lace bugs.
The New Jersey Forest Service provided the grant.
A primary cause of the death of newly planted trees is lack of water during the first two years after planting. For this reason, the borough Shade Tree Commission used the grant money to buy 60 “Gator Bags.” Each bag is placed around the trunk of a tree and can hold 20 gallons of water. The water seeps out of the bottom of the bag slowly and provides drip irrigation for the tree. The bag needs to be refilled with water weekly.
In the spring Shade Tree Commissioners placed watering bags around all the trees that had been planted the previous fall. At the same time the commissioners talked to residents who had a tree planted near their home and asked them to water the tree using the new watering bag. The commissioners explained how to fill the bags and gave written instructions to the resident on the use of the water bags.
