Behind the gorgeous facade, though, lie months of hard work and dedication, mostly by the models.

Clarke — who has modeled for Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Lanvin, Pucci, Diane Von Furstenberg and other top designers — is considered an up-and-coming “it” girl, with enormous blue eyes that sparkle or smolder.

Though a consummate professional, she nonetheless squirms with glee at her makeup table.

“It’s crazy being surrounded by so many of these beautiful, stunning people,” she says, perched on a director’s chair and swathed in a hot-pink satin robe. “I kind of feel like an idiot because I’m, like, staring at them, my jaw on the ground.”

A hairdresser who is bending waves into her brown hair gently tells her to hold still while the hot iron hovers near her forehead.

Clarke gets nervous before appearing half-naked in front of a crowd, but she has the confidence to look great.

But the Calvin Klein business is markedly different from many of its peers (particularly those based in Europe) in that it is almost entirely a licensing business, with scores of different agreements with partners who design, produce and sell Calvin Klein branded products from underwear to jeans to fragrances, and then pay a royalty on sales back to Calvin Klein.

In recent years, while some other fashion brands have been buying back their licensees, Calvin Klein has continued to push forward with a model that was born early in the history of the business, when Calvin Klein himself was still designing for the brand. Based on the success of this model, the Calvin Klein business was acquired by PVH Corporation in 2003, a massive brand conglomerate which also owns other licensed fashion brands Tommy Hilfiger, Van Heusen, IZOD, ARROW and Bass.

The day after a dinner in London to celebrate the Design Museum’s new home at the former Commonwealth Institute, I sat down with Tom Murry, chief executive of Calvin Klein, to learn more about how he makes this licensing model work....

Last night, at Calvin Klein's starkly minimalist Madison Avenue flagship store, celebrities and fashion industry notables converged to continue the fight for gay marriage. Hosted by The Human Rights Campaign, the small gathering seeks to follow up the the success of their initiative "New Yorkers for Marriage Equality" by expanding the scope of the project to now include the entire nation. The newest project—Americans for Marriage Equality—is taking the crusade for equal marriage rights to a new level in hopes of making same-sex marriage a nationwide achievement. 

Big names included the luminous Julianne Moore—the first iconic New Yorker to lend her voice to the campaign—wearing a wooly beige Calvin Klein Collection shift and white coat, as was Vogue
