No other decade of fashion could have been more influenced by television and movies than the 80s. This was the MTV generation. In conjunction with the 24-hour broadcast of music videos, television shows like Dynasty and Miami Vice and movies such as Flashdance and Pretty In Pink set the tone of fashion…scary fashion. The 80s was also a time of decadence, with a mantra of “The bigger, the better,” which influenced hairstyles on a grand scale.

Along with the aforementioned influencers of 80s fashion, Former First Lady Nancy Regan and Princess Diana’s love of fashion, brought in a blood-thirst for designer clothing. Nolan Miller, Perry Ellis, Donna Karan, and Calvin Klein became household names. Calvin Klein, especially, as that name in particular was on the butts of everyone via The Designer Jean.

Of course one cannot write about 80s fashion without mentioning the pop icons that commanded an entire generation of truly bad fashion. Enter The Material Girl, Madona, whom I personally credit for the downfall of society, but that aside, Michael Jackson with his beaded glove, Poison whose use of hairspray probably caused the hole in the ozone, and Run DMC whom we can all blame for the price of sneakers. So take a peek at the slideshow and videos for a walk down memory lane or a good laugh at a fashion generation that may have best been skipped.
