PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, the Philippines, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- In this western Philippine city, being a climate-friendly city makes good business and environmental sense.
From introducing electric-powered vehicles to leading the zero- carbon resorts campaign to maintaining a large forest cover, officials and the private sector of Puerto Princesa city are committed to keep its carbon emissions low while at the same time promote a more sustainable tourism industry.
This, even if the tourism sector is one of the biggest industries herea sector that can be energy-intensive and hence a major carbon emitter. The travel and tourism sector accounts for five percent of global emissions, according to the World Tourism Organization.
"Being an environmentalist is not just about planting trees. It 's also about looking into other aspects of the environment as well," Rebecca V. Labit, city tourism officer, said in a briefing with members of the Philippine Network of Environmental Journalists, Inc. (PNEJ).
