The white van rolls through a grey Missouri morning, past muddy fields marked with dying red leaves and bare brown branches—a speck along the interstate, one of hundreds, heading southeast toward St. Louis. Jeff Christian’s hands wrap around the wheel, swaying with each dip and turn. His round face is marked with scars, under his chin, on his cheek, and up where his hairline used to be. His nose once curved left like a hockey stick, the product of wayward elbows and intended fists. Today it’s perfectly straight, the work of a plastic surgeon in Arizona.

Each wound on his six-foot-two frame is a chapter from a 24-year journey across North America and Europe, through hockey’s junior and minor-pro leagues. He’s played for 23 different teams, chasing his dream of becoming an NHL star. He’s passed a puck to Mario Lemieux, exchanged punches with Rick Tocchet, scored a goal for Canada, replaced two rows of teeth, and been on 30-hour bus trips. He packed his life in a suitcase, playing a game that became a life. Until, that is, the road crumbled beneath him.

When first came out, I knew there was no way this body was ever even going to attempt wearing them.

As I have grown older the idea of wearing the stylish of the younger generation has never really been my thing. I don’t exactly have a pot belly, but these jeans seem to demand a six pack stomach and alas, this is not the case with me. Besides, they look so uncomfortable and I wonder if they get any lower when you try to sit down. Oh well, not too be too outdated, I will wear the mid-rise jeans.

The older I get, the more I am constantly wrestling with the idea that I am no longer the young stud I use to be. Jeans are one of the clothing items that I of course still wear a lot of, but my style is much different than that of my sons.

I have never professed to being the king of fashion by any means, but I’m trying to balance my own body needs with the current fashion trends. I definitely don’t want to wear the low rise baggy jeans that I’m seeing all over the television, they just will not flatter me or look appropriate for my age. But I like to try and look as good as possible with what I have to work with....
