It may have gone largely unrecognised but last week was a very good week for Australia and its neighbours.

It is fashionable to be cynical about the visits of US presidents and sceptical about increased military engagement. But the visit of Barack Obama on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the ANZUS alliance, brief though it was, was much more than a mere polite formality or ceremonial appearance. The fact that Obama has such remarkable command of the English language whilst having such limited power over the American Congress made it easy to be dismissive of his typically soaring speech to the Australian Parliament. Fatigue with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and a habitual low level of tolerance for gushing praise from our own political leaders for anyone, much less US presidents, combined with a crisis of confidence in America's ability to return to its former position of economic strength blinds us to the real substance of this visit.
