Most bread machines make a choice of one-, 1.5- and 2-pound loaves. Since you won’t be using the preservatives found in store-bought bread, it will get stale more quickly. You may want to make smaller loaves, so don’t buy too big a machine.

Many bread machines also knead pizza dough, make jams and bake other items, including nut and fruit breads, cakes, desserts and even meatloaf.

Some are easy to operate - just add the wet, then dry, ingredients, and push a button. Others allow you to customize the finished product to your recipe, choose whether you want a light or dark crust and set a timer for the bread to be ready later.

Some offer a manual stop/pause feature to add more water or ingredients after the cycle has begun. They may even beep when it’s time to add those ingredients.

A see-through window will let you observe how your bread is shaping up without opening the machine. For easy cleanup, look for a bread-maker with parts that are removable and dishwasher-safe.
