The UW-Milwaukee men’s basketball team won its Horizon League opener last night, 59-41 at home over Loyola of Chicago. The UW-Green Bay men needed a late rally to beat Illinois-Chicago at home, 71-68.

The Panthers are the defending regular season champions from a year ago – and they showed why as the dominated inside. Milwaukee out-scored Loyola 34-8 in the paint. And they out-rebounded the Ramblers 42-20, which helped give the Panthers a 16-2 edge in second-chance points. UWM led by four at the half. But they had a 21-to-7 run early in the second half, and Loyola never got within single digits after that. Three Milwaukee players scored in double figures, led by Ryan Allen with 14. Walt Gibler had 13 for the Ramblers, which fell to 1-and-5 overall. Milwaukee improved to 6-1, and will host Illinois-Chicago in another conference match-up tomorrow afternoon.

UIC had its biggest lead at 66-63 with 2:12 to play. But the Phoenix scored eight of the final 10 points to win the Horizon League opener. Alec Brown scored 17 points, as four Green Bay players scored in double figures. The Phoenix got 39 points from its bench. And they committed just seven turnovers – and only four in the final 33 minutes. Daniel Barnes had 17 points and seven rebounds for Illinois-Chicago, which dropped to 2-4 overall. Green Bay improved to 3-4, and will hold host Loyola tomorrow in their second conference game.
