CANADA CLOBBERS JAPAN

(STAFF) -- Midland native Adam Dixon had a goal and an assist as Team Canada bombarded Japan, 8-0, at the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge.

The defencemen assisted on the team's second goal in the first period before putting Canada up 5-0 midway through the third period, Sunday afternoon.

Team Canada played Norway on Monday night after Examiner deadlines.

GRIZ LOSE HEARTBREAKER

(STAFF) -- After a heartbreaking loss to the Algonquin Thunder on Saturday, the Georgian Grizzlies women's volleyball team bounced back with a straight-set win over the La Cite Coyotes on Sunday afternoon.

Sports celebrity dinner

(STAFF) — The head table for next May's Rotary Club Sports Celebrity Dinner has been confirmed.

There will be three Hall of Famers, including Ferguson Jenkins (baseball), Dale Hawerchuk (hockey) and Sandy Hawley (racing) along with Johnny Bower and 30 other table celebrities.

The event will be held May 17 at the ANAF Hall on George Street in Barrie.

Master of ceremonies for the evening will be comedian Mike Bullard.

The dinner is held every two years and is already 80% sold out.

Central wins at OFSAA

BROCKVILLE (STAFF) — The Barrie Central Phoenix senior girls basketball team won a pair of games to open the OFSAA tournament.

Central beat St. Matthew, 40-30, on Thursday before handing Scollard Hall a 59-43 defeat.
