An 81-year-old woman who told a sheriff’s deputy she “probably had too much” to drink was charged Monday with DUI.

Around 7:30 p.m., Deputy Alan Jones saw a silver car without any headlights on that was swerving as it traveled west on State Road 200. The deputy tried to stop the car in the 8100 block, but the driver would not stop. As traffic backed up, the car stopped in the 8600 block and Jones approached the vehicle.

Roberta Irwin told the deputy that she did not know he was behind her.

After detecting a strong odor of alcohol, Jones asked Irwin how much she had to drink and she said “several,” but did not know how many, noted the arrest report.

Irwin failed a field sobriety exercise and was taken to the Marion County Jail, where she blew .173 on a blood alcohol test. The state’s legal limit is .08.

Man on golf cart charged with DUI

SUMMERFIELD — A man riding a golf cart on a roadway was arrested Monday and charged with DUI, refusal to submit to a breath test and driving while license is suspended or revoked.

Catawba’s men’s basketball team lost 74-66 in its SAC opener at Carson-Newman on Wednesday night.

The Eagles (5-3) led 37-33 at halftime.

Antoine Davis scored 21 points for the Eagles, and Ishmael Sanders had 16.

The Indians (3-3) were led by freshmen Willie Gilmore (15 points, six rebounds, four assists) and Tyrece Little (13 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks).

High-scoring Keon Moore was held to nine points on 3-for-16 shooting.

Catawba shot just 3-for-19 on 3s and hit just 33.9 percent from the field.

The Indians got as close as 60-56 with 5:47 left on a 3-pointer by Lee Martin, but the Eagles held on.

Catawba is home on Saturday afternoon against unbeaten and fourth-ranked Lincoln Memorial.
