BLOOMINGTON — An Indiana University researcher will receive an international peace prize for his work promoting democracy in his home country of Liberia.

Amos Sawyer is one of 20 people who will receive the 2011 Gusi Peace Prize Thursday at a ceremony in Manila, the Philippines. The prize is presented each year by a Manila-based nonprofit foundation.

Sawyer is co-director and associate director of the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University. He is a Liberian citizen and served as interim president of the African nation in 1990-94. In recent years Sawyer has chaired the Governance Commission of Liberia.

Last week, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf bestowed Liberia's highest national honor on Sawyer, admitting him into the Most Venerable Order of the Knighthood of the Pioneers.
