Boeheim mum on Fine abuse charges in weekly radio address

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim did not address the Bernie Fine investigation at the start of his weekly radio show.

Thursday night's show began with host Matt Park saying Boeheim made “extensive comments” Tuesday and nothing more would be said about the inquiry.

Three men, including two former Syracuse ballboys, have accused Boeheim's longtime assistant, who was fired Sunday, of molesting them as minors.

More than a dozen students had put up tents and already were waiting by the doors of the dome for Friday's night game against No. 10 Florida in a temporary encampment called “Boeheimburg.” Huddling against the cold, one group of students, who said they have been waiting outside since Tuesday, enthusiastically supported Boeheim.

Max Kaplan, a freshman from Randolph, N.J., called Boeheim “the face of Syracuse basketball.

Hope Family Services is a shelter for domestic abuse victims in Manatee County. The purpose of the strongman contest is to “lift up” the women and child survivors of domestic violence, said Rebecca Shannon, general manager of the Beachhouse Restaurant.

“These big muscle men have the heart to do this,” said Shannon.

The Beachhouse Restaurant and City Fitness in Bradenton are co-sponsors of “Brawn on the Beach.”

Some 40 businesses also have kicked in as sponsors, said Shannon

Bleachers will be available for spectators, and food tents will offer food and drinks for purchase at discounted prices. There also will be a 50/50 drawing that divides the pot between the winner and Hope Family Services.

The event is free for spectators. For more information, call 941-713-5369 or visit www.groupersandwich.com.

Research Roundup: Recession's Big Impact On Men's Insurance ...

Researchers examined three sets of surveillance data and found that of the estimated 1.2 million persons in the United States living with the human immunodeficiency virus, 942,000 persons were aware of their infection. More than three-quarters of those were "linked to care" and among HIV-infected adults in care, "45 percent received prevention counseling, and 89 percent were prescribed antiretroviral therapy." They concluded: "Prevalence of HIV testing and linkage to care are high but warrant continued effort. Increasing the percentages of HIV-infected persons who remain in HIV care, achieve viral suppression, and receive prevention counseling requires additional effort" (Cohen et al., 11/29).

Archives of Internal Medicine : Factors Associated With 30-Day Readmission Rates After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention The researchers write: "Thirty-day readmission rates have become a publicly reported quality performance measure for congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)" They studied PCI hospitalizations and readmissions at one facility from 1998-2008, and found a number of factors — including being a woman, on Medicare or having less than a high school education — increased the risk of readmission. They conclude: "Nearly 1 in 10 patients undergoing PCI were readmitted within 30 days. Thirty-day readmission after PCI was associated with a higher risk of 1-year mortality" (Khawaja et al., 11/28).
