I HADN'T thought of Japan as a tourist destination. What was it?

A father who'd been in Japan in WWII, the fact that I've never liked bonsai- I've always thought it was a bizarre practice to torture plants into graceful submission - or was it the whales?

A number of people had said to me “Japan's a great place to visit.” An opportunity came my way to go on a kind of eco-tourism holiday to the northern most island visiting national parks.

The walking wouldn't take me out of my comfort zone, and I'd experience wonderful food, go to onsens (public baths) at the end of each day, stay at ryoken(local inns) and occasionally sleep on tatami(straw mats) on the floor.
