This is the first area store for the Atlanta-based company, which opened its first location in 2004, started aggressively growing through franchises in 2008 and now has 136 stores. Flip Flop Shops has a store in Greenville, and plans to open two more in South Carolina - one in Columbia and another in Charleston - by year’s end, Curin said.
Flip Flop Shops plans to open another five stores in South Carolina by the end of next year, including a second location along the Grand Strand - likely in the North Myrtle Beach area - in spring or summer 2013, he said.
“Definitely another shop is on the horizon,” Curin said.
The Myrtle Beach store is owned by Laney and Craig Pierce, who have operated the Flip Flop Shops in Wilmington, N.C., for two years. The franchise is a natural for Myrtle Beach and its throngs of tourists, Laney Pierce said.
“Flip flops are definitely a beach necessity,” she said.
Curin credits the company’s success of double-digit growth in sales every year, even through the recession, with a growing acceptance of flip flops in more places and the company’s business model focusing on that niche product.

Just because you wear the Reef Men’s Phantom Sandals doesn’t mean you also have to wear an uncomfortable white mask and pine freakishly over a girl. But the Phantom flip-flops do have water-friendly nubuck uppers and air mesh linings, so you might be tempted to stroll down to the surf. And while you’re there, a shark might hurl itself out of the water and snark off half your face. Then you might want to wear a mask. At least if that happens, the Phantoms Sandals’ EVA footbeds and arch supports will keep the bottoms of your feet comfortable....
I am a huge fan of Reef SANDY Sandals, and was disappointed by the Mallory. I bought them in pink for about $10 and they are very cute and thong portion is comfortable. HOWEVER, they are MUCH narrower than Sandys and other Reefs that I have worn. The arch is also much more pronounced than other Reef sandals I have worn. I would return them if I had paid more than $10 (and if it wasn’t such a hassle.) I will probably just wear them, but not when I have to walk very far.
